Overview
School of Mechatronical Engineering is one of the oldest schools in Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and founded in 1954. It was named as Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electromechanical Engineering, and School of Mechatronic Engineering. And the name of “School of Mechatronical Engineering” was finally utilized in 2008. 
 
Faculty
There are around 260 faculty and staff members, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 distinguishable professor of Yangtze river scholars, 4 winners for “National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars”, 2 members of Discipline Appraisal Group of State Academic Degrees Committee Council, 4 national experts of Young and Middle-aged with Outstanding Contributions, 5 recipients of Talents of the Ministry of Education in the new century. Among the whole faculty, there are 70 professors and 94 assocciate professors. The school also has 7 Innovative Research Team of national or provincial-and-ministerial level, and 2 Overseas Expertise Introduction Centers.

Teaching and Research Platforms
The college has a world-class platform for teaching and researching in China. The laboratory area is around 18644 m2 and 8339 sets of equipment, which values 490 million RMB. These include the State Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology, the State Key Laboratory of Electromechanical Dynamic Control, the Education Ministry Key Laboratory for Bionic robots and systems, the Education Ministry Key Laboratory for High Energy Density Compound, the Ministry of Industry and Information Co-innovation Center of Safe and Protection, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Intelligent Robots and Systems, as well as the other teaching and research institutions. In addition, the school also establishes 3 public teaching centers and 7 specialized teaching laboratories.
 

Achievements
To meet the national significant strategic demands, SME has joined in many national key projects, e.g., “863 project”, “973 project”, and National Natural Science Foundation projects. Owing to those national key projects, the school has also achieved a number of high-level and influential achievements. In the recent five years, the school has won 1 National Award for Technological Invention, 2 National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, and more than 30 Provincial Science and Technology Achievement Awards. Over than 700 academic papers have been published in SCI. In addition, the annual scientific research funds is over than 250 million RMB. 

Teaching and Talent Training
The school has over 2000 students, including 910 undergraduates, 580 master degree students, and 500 doctoral students. Since 2011, the school was awarded the " First Prize of Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievement " twice and“First Prize for Outstanding Education Teaching Achievement of BIT” twice. Moreover, there is one “Famous Teacher of Higher Education School in Beijing” as well as one “Research Teaching Team of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology” in SME. In order to create a good academic atmosphere for students, a variety of student activities, such as undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training program, postgraduate science week, and PhD forum, have been performed every year.

International Cooperation 
There are two talent collaboration programs, i.e., “Design and Manufacture of Intelligent Mobile System” and “Safety and Production”, in SME. Meanwhile, more than 10 national project of overseas expertise introduction program, i.e., “One Belt One Road Program” and “Overseas Famous Teacher Program”, were approved since 2019. Together with the financial support of those program above, many well-known scholars are regularly invited for academic exchanging and research cooperation, e.g., 98 foreign experts have been invited to SME in 2019. In order to maintain the innovativeness, advancement, and leading position of disciplines in SME, several important international academic conferences, e.g., “IEEE International Conference on Cyborg and Bionic Systems” ,“International Workshop on Intensive Loading and its Effects”, are regularly hold by the SME every year. Furthermore, we also build long-term and stable relationships with many famous universities all over the world, such as Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Delft University of technology (Netherland), Tokyo Institute of Technology(Japan), Moscow Bauman State Technical University(Russia), University of Missouri (USA), etc.
